How 'not' to do marketing

I just wanted to watch Ben McLemore's dunk, but saw this from Google Ads:  "Please answer a question to continue reading this page --or-- (Tweet it, Like it or +1 it)

Now, how can I 'like' it if I haven't even seen it yet?  Perhaps I am being too literal?

Evernote for Windows Tips

I significantly improved the speed of Evernote 5 for Windows 8.1 by turning off 'Related Notes'.  I never really understood this feature anyway.  To turn it off - goto the View Menu and uncheck 'Show Related Notes'.  This will allow your notes to load immediately.

Also on the View Menu, goto 'Left-Panel' and turn off the Atlas, Market and Announcements.  I follow them in Feedly, so I don't need it here.

My latest Windows 8.1 thoughts...

I've been using Windows 8 for over a year...and...I do like Windows 8.1, Desktop Mode is fast and clean looking.  I am trying to limit the amount of Windows applications I install - at this point I have only installed 4:  Chrome, Evernote, Skitch and ParaPlan (see below).  SkyDrive integration comes out of the box, so I use it.  SkyDrive is awesome in my opinion and I have 25GB of space too.  Since I don't have Office, I now have two choices for viewing/editing spreadsheets: Google Sheets or SkyDrive's Excel Web App.  The Excel Web App has more functions I need like CLEAN( ), but both work great.  I have everything in the cloud using Google Drive, SkyDrive, DropBox and Evernote.  Each has there own place for what I use them for.  I dumped Microsoft Word a while back since Google Docs now handles images, tables and WYSIWYG better.  I also use the Google Launcher instead of my Start button...

Now for the Start Screen - I hate it and never use it.  I have tried to install some Metro apps like Evernote and Facebook, but they are clunky, load slow and are hard to use.  I snap over to my Start Screen to check the weather or search only.  Hey Microsoft...don't make me move my mouse to the corners (or sides) of the screen to do stuff please.  Thank God for 'Boot to Desktop'...here is what my Start Screen looks like :(...

New Gmail - Attachment Choices!

I like the new choices for attached office docs in Gmail.  You can now visually select whether to a) Download, b) Save to Drive or c) Edit with gSheets

Stopping Evernote's 'Predictive Notes'

I want to turn off the Evernote feature that automatically adds a new note title in iOS based on my calendar.  This feature is called 'predictive note titles'.  So I googled "how do i stop predictive note titles in evernote".  However, once I typed in 'how do i stop' - Google auto-fill options made me lol...see pic:

Currently there is no way to turn this (predictive note titles) off as I have found, so I have submitted it to Evernote and will post my findings later here.

I just found it!  You can turn off automatic note titles in Settings. Tap your name/email address on the home screen, scroll to Note Editor and then toggle off "Suggested Note Titles".

And suddenly...my Win8 PC turned into a Chromebook

The Google Google Chrome Store just released a new section called 'For Your Desktop'.  So now I can install Chrome apps that run on my desktop in their own window which I love.  I am no longer tied into my browser frame.  I love moving my desktop apps around for many different reasons and now its a breeze with these new apps and I know they will be adding more.  Furthermore, with the Chrome App Launcher at the bottom-left of my desktop...voila! I have a 'pc with a start menu', but its a Chrome App Start Menu, not Windows.  I have also completely weened myself from MS Office entirely with Google Docs, Sheets & Slides.  I love everything Google does and now I don't really need Windows.  There is only one single reason I need Windows now...ParaPlan.  I can easily, however, run ParaPlan on a virtual PC via Chrome Remote Desktop, so there you go.

Evernote Error Code 2732 Fix for WIndows 8

From Evernote:

Evernote Error Code 2732 Fix for WIndows 8

If you are trying to upgrade Evernote in Windows 8 (not the dumb Evernote Touch for Metro) and you are seeing this...

Then do the following:

Solution is in EvernoteSetup.log file found here: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp

In mine I found following line which contains the error stored in the registry:
A--Located product {0ED78DCC-01A9-11E1-B2F1-1CC1DEF07CBE} with upgrade code {AE2C091E-CF5F-4e30-8659-D640E23A8B99}.
B--Open regedit and SEARCH first 8 digits in reverse of the GUID -- for me it was E190C2EA.
C--I found 2 keys in registry having this text, exported them to a file, then deleted.

Solution details found here:

A Cool Tech Travel Day

From Evernote:

A Cool Tech Travel Day

Well I am in Columbus for the Ohio Transit Show and got woken up by this...

However, before this, I had a great day traveling here because of all the cool tech things that happened.  I drove to KCI Parking Spot (as usual) and had to park by the fence because the are finally resurfacing their TERRIBLE lot :)

So I go through security and this nice lady sets out a bin for me, I get thru into the Southwest gate area and find a comfy seat.  I think to myself, I should charge my stuff...so low and behold in the console by my nice chair are 4 plug-ins!  Thanks Southwest

So I check Google Now on my phone and see that they have already prepared cards for my flight info and hotel :)

So that was very awesome, then I grab a sandwich at Potbelly in Midway and move on to here, Columbus.  I get my rental car from Budget/Avis, a nice red Chevy Cruze.  I get in, open that console and see a USB jack.  I plug in my iPhone and this immediately pops up on screen:

Apparently I had just connected to Chevy MyLink and my Siri directions also came thru the speakers.  WOW COOL

Get to hotel and tell the boys (Tim and Brett) that I had arrived at the show.  Tim tells me he already knew that - because he was following my geographic progress via ParaPlan Mobile :)

I go down to conference and set up our booth:

I then have a great chat with my good buddy Regan from HybriDrive at the opening event pizza social!

Nice day.

A nice feature of Microsoft Word 2013

From Evernote:

A nice feature of Microsoft Word 2013

You can't do this in Google Docs :)

If you have a Word doc with a nice background and you need an inserted image to overlay without its pesky white background, just do this...
  1. Insert the photo to your word doc
  2. Set its position
  3. Double-click the new image to launch the Format Ribbon
  4. Click Color from the Adjust Menu
  5. Select "Set Transparent Color", then click the color on your image to be transparent (e.g. white) and Voila!

My thoughts on being a salesman

My ongoing note list since I started selling only:
  • be you
  • be yourself
  • be normal
  • be funny
  • be honest
  • get personal, but don't take things personally
  • be real
  • don't use templates ever
  • write them a note, a real one
  • give them a solution that will actually help them
  • don't give them something they don't need
  • don't give them a reason to say no
  • position them to say yes
  • tell them they are free to choose
  • tell them they are not obligated to do anything
  • be polished
  • be informative
  • be intelligent
  • be diligent, but not needy
  • its just business
  • trust the process
  • be patient
